Join us for an artist reception on Tuesday, February 13th, from 4 p.m. – 6 p.m. at Sidecar Coffee, 2215 College Street, Cedar Falls.
PROJECT VISION: In 1964 President Lyndon B. Johnson proclaimed October 15 of each year as White Cane Safety Day. In 2023 students from across the state of Iowa who are visually impaired set aside October 14 and 15 to collaborate on a fun project.
Susan Rolinger, IESBVI Director of Expanded Learning, and artist Casey Slack developed a “white cane version” of abstract artwork using a surrealist technique called Automatic Drawing. The students utilized their visual impairment and employed their cane movements to sketch the artwork!
PROJECT SPONSOR: Iowa Educational Services for Blind and Visually Impaired (IESBVI).
PROJECT ARTIST: Artist and designer, Casey Slack is honored to have been able to work with the students and teachers from the IESVBI program.
When all public showings are completed, each child who participated in White Cane Day will receive one of the paintings. Compositions are also being presented to the Iowa Department of Education and the IESBVI 4PLUS Program.
The canvases will be on display at Sidecar Coffee now through the month of March. Check back for future gallery showings.
